I CAN’T say my alternate-universe-nineties-whatever parents
took it very well. Yet somehow, I stood my ground— something I doubt I would have been able to do back home. Of course, I left out the facts about Dylan they didn’t need to know, but even then, the conversation ended with me slamming the door of my room with both of them yelling after me.
Oh, well. They’d just have to get used to it.
I didn’t take much with me except the guitar, my CDs, some clothes, and a few posters. It all fit nicely in the back of my decrepit Volvo, and I didn’t even need Dylan’s help to carry it all upstairs to the studio.
I put my stuff on the shelves and in the drawers that Dylan freed for me, and piled up my sheets and blanket on the couch where I was supposed to be sleeping. Supposed.
Dylan watched me, looking peaceful and contented. “Welcome to your new place, Tyler. You’re all grown up now.”
I tried to hide the fact that I was blushing.
“We should have some kind of celebration. A housewarming, of sorts.”
Dylan walked over to one of the shelves that lined the wall and pushed aside some of the CDs on it. I saw him take out a small bottle that glowed green like an emerald. “Is that what I think it is?”
Dylan grinned. I hadn’t seen him so pleased with himself since I’d known him. “I figured, if it’s good enough for Trent Reznor….”
We sat cross-legged on the floor and drank the absinthe—he showed me the proper way, with the sugar cube and water. I thought it would be extremely bitter, but it had a pleasant flavor, with a strong hint of something like licorice. I remembered reading that there was wormwood in there, and that it was supposed to give you hallucinations or something, but all I could feel was the familiar giddy lightheadedness from the alcohol.
Dylan kissed me. We toppled to the floor, with him rolling on top of me. My foot knocked over one of the glasses, spilling the little remaining drink, but by then neither of us cared.
Back home, I didn’t get around as much as I made my friends think I did. My one experience was a girl back in high school, and we got drunk on cheap wine and did it on the narrow bed in her room. I remember it being a little awkward, and I was too tipsy and lost my hard-on twice before we could do anything. I found it kind of mechanical, stressful, but I decided it was because I was too drunk and it was the first time, and she wasn’t that cute, anyway, one of those emo girls with zits under a thick layer of makeup.
Now I knew for sure that wasn’t the problem.
Dylan knew what he was doing, I could tell, so I just let him. At some points it was weird. At first the feeling of his fingers inside me was alien and shocking, and when I saw him tear open a condom and put it on, I freaked out for just a moment.
